Your custom motorcycle is finally ready. It roared into life and you just can’t wait to take a long ride just to see how well it performs on the road. Chances are, you were meticulous while setting it up. You took no chances. Each bolt went where it was supposed to be. You’re now sure your bike is as good as any other if not better.
As a matter of fact, you’re convinced your bike is better than some of the most expensive bikes in town. Unfortunately for you, custom motorcycles come along with several rules. That is, there are things you should do and things you should never do or even try with your custom motorcycle. Here’s all you need to know.
You must Register It
Register your custom motorcycle so that you can ride it on the road. The process can be somewhat tricky if you’re doing it for the first time. Note that each state has different requirements on the documents you need to provide at the registration office. In California for instance, custom motorcycles are only ‘built for private use’.
This means you cannot resell your bike. The registration certificate also indicates that a licensed manufacturer did not construct the bike. Many other states have similar provisions. The bottom line here is to ensure you do not get in trouble with the law for riding an unregistered customized bike.
Don’t Forget Aesthetics
Think of your custom motorcycle as a masterpiece. It should leave people staring every time you ride it. With that in mind, consider mixing different types of metal finishes. Polished aluminum, stainless steel and chrome all shine with different tones.
Whatever you go for, your style should boil down to a stunning blend of metal finishes. Lots of chrome parts are the choice of many custom bike enthusiasts. Let your imagination run wild here so that you end up with a truly unique bike that turns heads.
The Tires Matter
It is easy to focus on the engine, brakes and other parts of your bike at the expense of the tires. To ensure this does not happen, mount all of the custom hardware first before installing the tires. That way, you can be sure everything will fit as it should.
Remember to countercheck with your wheel and tire manufacturer each time you perform non-standard installations. While you at it, take into account vital factors such as the recommended rim width. This is vital as you do not want anything to impede your wheels or tires.
Custom Motorcycles Paintwork
This matters a lot. Unfortunately, most motorcycle enthusiasts know little about motorcycle paint. Take time to visit specific shops that specialize in custom motorbikes. Request for portfolios with finished bikes to give you an idea of how your desired paint will look on your bike. Lastly, find out the details of the warranty that a custom shop offers.
Make your Bike your own
When you customize your bike you really make it your own. There are many customization choices available to you and sometimes this can be a bit overwhelming. You can customize the paint work, add several bolt-ons, add custom wheels and tires and special saddlebags etc.
